Zellige are the beads of the tile world and probably among the
most iconic representation of Morocco.
Today, as the famous little glazed terracotta square continues its journey, it has adapted to modern interiors,
imparting its luminosity on every wall or floor.
The traditions used to acquire the irreplaceable colouring from a rich terracotta have not varied since they appeared in the Moresque architecture almost a millienium ago. The subtle interplay of colour variation is created by the small differences of shapes and shades from one square to the other. Where the industrial tile has now achieved a level of perfection, it has forgotten that tiling is a subtle and accessible art.
Zellige making is considered an art in itself and passed on from generation to generation of maâlems (master craftsmen).
The Zellige is the delicate reminder that differences make us richer.
